A COMPENDIOUS AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF GRIDHRASI (SCIATICA) - A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Gridhrasi is a condition characterized by severe pain in low back radiating to toes which includes pain in low back, gluteal region, pelvic region, lumbosacral region, thigh, knee, calf region and foot. It is one among the Vata Vyadhi and it comprises Vataja and Vata-Kaphaja types. Vataja Gridhrasi is characterized by Stambha (Stiffness), Ruk (Radiating pain), Toda (Pricking type of pain), Spandana (tingling sensation) and Vata- Kaphaja type along with all above symptoms characterized by Tandra (Tiredness in affected part and generalized tiredness), Gaurava (Heaviness in affected part) and Arochaka (Anorexia). The condition is interpreted as Sciatica in the modern science based on resemblance in presentation and Clinical features. In the present study it is aimed to manage a subject of Vata-Kaphaja Gridhrasi by means of tremendous Ayurvedic treatment such as Yoga Basti, Patra Pinda Sweda, Kati Basti, Dhanyamla dhara along withShamanaushadhi (Oral medications). The subject showed satisfactory and remarkable improvement after the treatment without any adverse drug reaction.
