ABSTRACT
The term "cosmetic," originating from Greek roots, signifies "adornment." As per the Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1940, "cosmetics" encompasses any product intended for application—whether by rubbing, pouring, sprinkling, spraying, or any other means—to augment or alter one's appearance, including ingredients utilized in cosmetics. Both men and women prioritize appearance, acknowledging that beauty not only captures attention but also fosters a psychological sense of well-being and bolsters self-confidence. Beyond superficial beauty, the condition of the skin holds significance. Ayurveda addresses both healthy skin and aesthetics through distinct avenues, covering topics such as the management of skin-related ailments and daily skincare routines. Ancient Ayurvedic texts delineate various herbs beneficial for skin health. Panchakarma, a fundamental principle in Ayurvedic medicine primarily recognized for its detoxification properties, also holds relevance in cosmetology. Its ability to expel toxins from the body and deeply cleanse the skin renders it beneficial in cosmetic applications. With Ayurvedic-based cosmetics already established in the global market, Panchakarma has garnered considerable attention within the cosmetic industry. This literature review endeavors to elucidate the efficacy of Panchakarma as a successful therapeutic intervention in the realm of cosmetics.
