ABSTRACT
Effect of Ethanolic Extract of Ocimum basilicumleaves on Streptozotocin induced Diabetic Cardiomyopathy in Rats showed that the ethanolic extract of ocimum basilicumleaves ansd STZ treated (65mg/kg) rats have been suggested as a novel animal model that mimicsthe naturalhistoryand metabolic characteri sticsofthecom mon type 2 diabetes in humans, and is suitable for testing of antidiabetic compounds. Diabetic rats treated with dose of Ocimum basilicum from 14th day at 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg shows no weight gain, indicating the beneficialeffect of the Ocimum basilicum. HDL leveldecreases in negative controlgroup, which upon oraladministration of ethanolic extract of Ocimum basilicum at dose of 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg resulted in a significant elevation (P>0.001) ofHDL level. Elevation in CK-MB concentration in diabetic rat rise in parallel followingmyocardial injury and Cardiomyopathy starting to increase 4-6 h after injury, reaching peak serum concentration after 12-24 hour and baseline after 48-72 hour. Upon oral administration with Ocimum basilicum resulted in a significantly (P>0.001) decrease the levels of CK-MB at dose of 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg, indicating the beneficial effect of the Ocimum basilicum.
