ABSTRACT
Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, have been shown to stimulate the immune system, improve digestion, and modulate gut microbiota in various organisms. However, their specific effects on fish health and performance have not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of Lactobacillus acidophilus as a probiotic in fish diets on survival, growth, and biochemical parameters. Labeo rohita fingerlings were divided into different diet groups, including a basal diet alone and diets supplemented with varying concentrations of Lactobacillus acidophilus. The fish were observed and measured at regular intervals, and their weight, length, total protein content, total lipid content, and survival rate were recorded. Statistical analysis, including a one-way analysis of variance, was performed to determine significant differences between the diet groups. The results showed that the inclusion of Lactobacillus acidophilus in fish diets had a significant positive effect on survival, growth, and biochemical parameters. The group fed with a 1% concentration of Lactobacillus acidophilus mixed diet exhibited the highest survival rate, improved growth in terms of weight and length, and increased total protein and total lipid content compared to the other diet groups. This study demonstrates that the addition of Lactobacillus acidophilus as a probiotic in fish diets can significantly enhance survival, growth, and biochemical parameters. The improved outcomes observed in the 1% Lactobacillus acidophilus mixed diet group highlight the potential of this probiotic in promoting fish health and optimizing aquaculture production. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and optimize the dosage and duration of probiotic supplementation for optimal results in different fish species.
