Abstract

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF RECURRENT PREGNANCY LOSS W. S. R. TO PUTRAGHNI YONI VYAPAAT

Dr. Pallavi Kodage* and Dr. Ramadevi G., MS (Ayu)

ABSTRACT

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss is defined as the sequence of two or more spontaneous abortions as documented by either sonography or on histopathology, before 20 weeks. It affects approximately 1% of all women of reproductive age. The risk increases with each successive abortion reaching over 30% after three consecutive losses.[1] To have a successful motherhood continuation of pregnancy till term is as important as achieving conception. But recurrent loss of pregnancy is a distressing factor to both the physical and mental health of the couple. As it is a multifactorial entity, the etiology of pregnancy loss can be broadly included under genetic, endocrine, anatomical, environmental
and immunological factors. In Ayurveda, recurrent pregnancy loss can be correlated with Putraghni Yoni Vyapat explained by the Bruhatrayees based on the clinical features. Putraghni is a clinical entity characterized by repeated pregnancy loss due to excessive intake of ruksha ahara and vihara.[2] Acharya Sushruta says that the fetuses after attaining stability are repeatedly destroyed due to bleeding along with Osha, Chosha etc symptoms.[3] A detailed history taking along with necessary investigations is required as it is difficult to pinpoint the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss and in majority of the cases the cause remains unknown. In Ayurveda, Shodhana therapy ending with Uttara basti is advised especially in cases of unknown etiology followed by Samana therapy along with Satwavajaya Chikitsa as the treatment aims in rectifying the cause and providing the psychological support to the patients.
