PHARMACOGNOSTIC PROFILE OF MADHAVILATA (HIPTAGE BENGHALENSIS L.) ROOT

ABSTRACT
Background: Hiptage benghalensis L., a member of the Malpighiaceae family, is a key component of Ayurvedic medicine. The plant is large, evergreen, climbing shrub with brownish bark peeling off in flakes; young parts silky. Leaves opposite, elliptic-oblong, apex acute to acuminate, base rounded to cuneate and the margins are entire. Traditionally, the root of Hiptage benghalensis L. is being used in the treatment of obesity and helpful in reducing weight gain. The safety and efficacy of herbal medicines is closely correlated with the quality of the source material used in their production. Aim and Objective: Till date, no data have been found on micro-morphological evaluation on Madhavilata root. The present study has been focused on micro-morphological evaluation of Madhavilata root including its powder microscopy for the authentication and identification. Materials and Methods: Fresh Root of Madhavilata were collected; macroscopic and microscopic study was done as per the standard pharmacognostical procedures. Result and Conclusion: The result generated from this study would be useful in identification and standardization of the plant material Hiptage benghalensis L. towards quality assurance and also for preparation of a monograph on the plant.
