A REVIEW ON IMPORTANCE OF AYURVEDA AND YOGA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF NIDRANASH

ABSTRACT
Anidra commonly known as insomnia, is one of the most common disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide, which affect the person’s quality of life. Nidra comprises of a human’s 1/3rd of lifespan, it is a fundamental physiological need that is essential for overall health and well-being. Acharya sushruta mentioned that nidranasha i.e. complete loss of sleep is considered as arishta lakshanas. In charak Samhita it is said that Happiness-misery, nourishment-emaciation, strength-weakness, fertility-sterility, knowledge-ignorance, and also life-death deepends on the proper and improper sleep. Due to nidranash vata dosha gets vitiated which creates complications which range from minor symptoms like, jrumbha, tandra, shiro-roga, glani, akshigaurav to major diseases. Ayurveda mainly focuses on restoration and promotion of health, since it believe in principle of ‘swasthasya swasthya rakshanam’. Inayurveda there are many strategies for the prevention and management of nidranash with the help of dieatery modifications, external therapies, psycological management and with the help of yoga. There are various drug compounds used in modern science for symptomatic treatment of insomnia such anti-depressants, Hypnotics, Neuroleptics, etc. however there are many adverse effects of these treatments. That’s why ayurvedic approaches can be better choice in nidranash.
