Abstract

STUDY ON ANATOMICAL CAUSES OF VANDHYATVA (INFERTILITY)

Dr. Subhalakshmi Maity* and Dr. Durbadal Majumdar

ABSTRACT

The supreme God has blessed a women with the unique gift of being mother, but vandhyatva being the main obstacle to enjoy this motherhood. Infertility is the clinical entity where the couple fails to conceive even after one year of regular unprotected coitus. Infertility is estimated to occur in 10-15% of couples and almost 5% of female infertility is caused by anatomical defects. Ayurvedic classics explain different anatomical causes of infertility characterized under beejopaghata and yoni-pradosha based on these factors acharyas classified vandyatwa into three types vandhya, sapraja and avandhya. The main female anatomical causes of infertility include post –infectious tubal damage, endometriosis and congenital/acquired uterine anomalies which may lead to infertility, pregnancy loss and other obstetric complications. As Ayurveda focus more on the preventive aspect so before treating the infertility the cause should be ruled outfirst as anatomical defects are difficult to cure as most of them are congenital in origin. Hence having proper knowledge of anatomical defects may help in proper planning of the treatment.

Keywords: Vandhyatva, Infertility, Anatomical defects.
