Abstract

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PAKSHAGHATA-A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Pakshaghata is a Vataja Nanatmaja Vyadhi considered as Maha vyadhi., which is characterised by loss of function and mobility of half of the body either right or left. The condition similar to Pakshaghata in modern science is the hemiplegia. The commonest cause of hemiplegia is cerebrovascular accident or stroke. Stroke is a common medical emergency and the second leading cause of death worldwide. A cerebrovascular accident or stroke is defined as an acute focal neurological deficit resulting from cerebrovascular disease and lasting more than 24 hours (or causing earlier death) in which 85% is ischemic and 15% are primary hemorrhages. According to World Health Organisation, 15 million people suffer from stroke in world wide each year. CVA is not a disease in itself but is a heterogeneous group of disorders. It is not a diagnosis, but a clinical syndrome with numerous causes. The present study is a case report on management of stroke of amale patient aged 50 years with chief complaints of weakness of right upper and lower limbs. He was a diagnosed case of Acute ischemic CVA on the basis of clinical presentation and MRI report. Ayurvedic management was found to be effective in providing relief from chief complaints with improvement of overall health of the patient.
