Dr. Veena G. Rao*, Dr. Sushmitha N.R. and Dr. Unni Krishnan

ABSTRACT

In Ayurvedic classics, Hallucinations were called false perceptions (Mithyajnana), illusions (Maya), Infatuations (moha) or confusion (Bhrama). In Ayurveda mental illness are mainly understood under the heading of Unmada, Apasmara, Atatwabhinivesha etc. Unmada is an umbrella term comprising various kinds of psychiatric diseases characterised by the pervasion of Manas. Unmada is characterised by the disturbances of Manas (mind), Buddhi (decision taking capacity), Samgna gnana (orientation and responsiveness), Smriti (memory), Bhakti (desire), Sheela (personality), Cheshta (psychomotor activity), Achara (conduct or behaviour). So, In Ayurveda, Schizophreniza can be co- related to Buddhi Vibramsha. Ayurveda has described three types of management of psychiatric disorders, Daiva vyapashraya, Sattvavajaya and Yukti vyapashraya. In the present paper a case studyof a 60 years old female suffering from Buddhi vibramsha was successfully managed by adopting Yukti vyapashraya Chikitsa, with therapies like Nasya, Basti, Shirodhara followed by Shamanoushadhi and Satvavajaya Chikitsa. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was used to evaluate the efficacy of treatment, which showed worth detailing and promising results.
