ABSTRACT
The description of metabolic processes, operating at various levels inside the body, has been essentially covered in Ayurveda under thirteen types of Agnis. When these Agnis get disordered, they lead to the production of certain undesired elements or byproducts in the system, which are called ‘Ama’ in ayurveda and are considered a very important morbid factor responsible for the causation of a variety of diseases and play a key role in the genesis of most of the diseases. Generally, Ama formation is considered due to Jathragni Mandya but in commentaries of various Ayurveda compendia, it is cited that it can also take place due to Bhutagni and Dhatvagni Mandya. The present article attempts to establish the correlation of Ama formation to Dhavagni and Mahabhutagni Mandya.
Keywords: Ama, Agni, Agnimandya, Metabolism, Metabolic disorders.
