ABSTRACT
Objective: The goal of performing this study is to develop sustained release system of the antihistaminic agent chlorpheniramine maleate generally used in allergic disorders, common cold and other condition. Materials and Methods: Matrix tablet is one of the least complicated devices to sustain the release of drug candidates. Different types of polymers Agar, Tween 80, Span 80 were selected to sustain the release up to 12 hrs. Direct Compression method is used for preparation of matrix tablet. The formulated tablets passed the uniformity of weight, friability, uniformity of thickness and uniformity of diameter tests respectively. Results: The results obtained with the experimental values were compared with the predicted values. Conclusion: The results suggest that the developed sustained-release matrix tablets could provide quite regulated release of chlorpheniramine maleate upto nearly 12 hr.
Keywords: Agar, chlorpheniramine maleate, Matrix tablets, Sustained release, Tween 80, Span 80.
