Abstract

A LITERATURE REVIEW OF MANAGEMENT OF VATAKANTAKA (PLANTAR FASCIITIS) WITH AGNIKARMA

ABSTRACT

“Vatakantaka” is an Ayurveda term which can be correlate with “plantar fasciitis” which is a very common cause of heal pain now a days with peak incidence between 40 – 60 yrs of age as stated by Harrison. Vatakantaka in Ayurveda is a condition characterised by pain in feet, more specifically in the heel. It is a clinical diagnosis, as patients classically presents with pain that is particularly severe with the first few steps in the morning. Ayurveda describes the condition as Vatakantaka, resulting due to vitiation of Kapha-Vata Doshas. Although it is a self-limited condition. Conservative therapy is available in the form of NSAIDs, steroids and certain techniques such as steroidal injection at local site, all of these methods give short relief and are linked with well-documented negative effects. Ayurvedic treatment is one of the best for management of plantar fasciitis. In Ayurvedic view point pain in plantar fasciitis is due to Sanyu, Asthi,
Sandhigata Vata. Snehana, Swedana, Raktamokshana, Agnikarma, Eranda Taila pana are considered to be effective treatment in Vatakantaka.
