ABSTRACT
Epidemiological studies provide evidence for the idea that heavy alcohol consumers have higher risks of cardiovascular problems, while light alcohol consumers have reduced risks. Cardiomyopathy, systemic hypertension, supraventricular arrhythmias, hemorrhagic stroke, and heart failure unrelated to coronary artery disease (CAD) are among the cardiovascular conditions for which frequent drinking increases the risk. Lower rates of CAD, ischemic stroke, and CAD- related heart failure are associated with light-to-moderate drinking, which is likely unrelated to an increased risk of any cardiovascular disorder. Reasonable biological pathways linked to ethyl alcohol support a protective alcohol-CAD hypothesis. The increased protection provided by wine (particularly red) may be explained by potential non- alcoholic beneficial components, although wine drinkers may also benefit from ahealthy drinking habit or more favorable risk features. Individualized recommendations about the health advantages and hazards of alcohol consumption are necessary.
