Jarrar Husain Rizvi, Mohd. Mudassir, Zamir Ahmad* and Mohsin Masood

ABSTRACT

Dā’ al-Ḥayya is a disease of bald patches of the scalp described in classical Unani literature, with clinical features similar to Tinea capitis. It is the most common fungal skin infection caused by dermatophytes, mainly Microsporum canis and some species of Trichophyton, seen mostly in school-aged children worldwide. Many patients are reported to be unresponsive to modern allopathic treatment and turn to Unani hospitals for it. To document the effect of Unani treatment on Tinea capitis, this case report of an 8-year-old girl treated at the Skin OPD of Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College Hospital, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh has been compiled. She visited the OPD with patches of baldness and itching for several months and clinically diagnosed as a case of Tinea capitis and further confirmed by KOH investigation. She was prescribed Unani treatment; Iksere Qooba, Roghan shaar, Sharbat Murakkab Musaffi Khoon and Khamira marwareed khaas. Her signs and symptoms resolved completely with normal healthy hair within three months. However, safety profile, adequate scientific validation as well as mechanism of action require randomized clinical trials on larger sample sizes.

Keywords: Tinea capitis, Unani Medicine, Dermatophytosis, D?’ al-H?ayya.
