Abstract

METHOD DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION FOR THE ESTIMATION OF PROPYL PARABEN IN COSMETICS BY UV SPECTROSCOPY

V. Shirisha* and R. Parasuraman

ABSTRACT

This experiment is used to estimate the concentration of propylparaben in cosmetics. Propylparaben is an antifungal and antimicrobial agent and it is also used as preservative. The 4-hydroxybenzoic acid propyl ester's benzoate ester is propylparaben. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has determined that propylparaben is safe, taking into account potential endocrine disruptive effects and the safety assessment of the substance up to a concentration of 0.14%, propylparaben is suitable for use as a preservative in cosmetic goods. When applied to delicate, damaged, or broken skin, parabens can cause skin irritation and allergic responses. According to studies, parabens can be particularly irritating to people who already have psoriasis, eczema, or a pattern of contact dermatitis if they are used in high concentrations. So, we need to estimate the concentration of propylparaben in cosmetics by using UV spectrophotometer. The cosmetic products used in this experiment are creams, lotions, face powders, toothpastes, oil and the solvent used is methanol. The validation parameter of propylparaben studied the Y=0.108x +0.125, LOD and LOQ were 1.951 and 5.915.

Keywords: Propylparaben, Methanol, UV- Spectroscopy, Sonicator.
