ABSTRACT

This research paper focuses on the preparation and evaluation of fast-dissolving films containing Trachyspermum ammi (Ajwain) extract. The study explores the formulation process and assesses the key characteristics, such as dissolution rate and film properties, to determine the feasibility and potential applications of these films in pharmaceutical or nutraceutical contexts. Ajwain or Trachyspermum ammi is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae or Umbelliferae. It is a small, oval-shaped, seed-like fruit containing many essential oils, particularly thymol as its active constituent. It is primarily used for stomach disorders like indigestion, flatulence, diarrhoea and colic in paediatrics and elders. It is rarely eaten raw. It is used in Indian cuisine. Though it is available in Ayurveda and Siddha markets as tablets, syrups, inhalations and liquid extract, to increase patient compliance, particularly in paediatrics it is formulated as fast dissolving film. In this study, was aimed to formulate and evaluate fast dissolving films of Trachyspermum ammi (Ajwain), using different polymers like HPMC E5, HPMC E15, HPC and PVA. The film forming ability and in vitro disintegration of the formulations were compared. The film was prepared by solvent casting method. The present study revealed that all films have satisfactory film-forming ability. Among these F1 formulations formulated with HPMC E5 as a polymer showed good film forming ability, flexibility, and fast disintegration time.

Keywords: Fast dissolving film, Thymol, Ajwain, HPMC E5, Film forming ability.
