ABSTRACT

The present investigation was conducted on the assessment of hypoglycemic, antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic activities of aqueous extract and its soluble fractions, methanol 80% and crude polysaccharides from Raphia sese ripe fruits collected inn Kwilu in Democratic Republic of Congo in experimental Wistar rats. In hypoglycemic test, results indicated that aqueous and methanol 80% extracts, and soluble fractions chloroform, ethylacetate, n-butanol and residual aqueous decreased significantly glucose level of treated normal rats at values between 79.6±0.1and 82.7±0.2 mg/dl. Polysaccharides acted in the same manner by reducing this glucose level to 78.9±0.3 mg/dl compared to negative control (untreated normal rats) with glucose level of 85.6±0.2 mg/dl after 5h. In antidiabetic test for 5 h, aqueous and methanol 80%, and soluble fractions reduced glycemia levels of treated diabetic rats by bringing them to values from 138.6±0.3 to 174.8±0.5 mg/dl compared to negative control with glycemia level of 202.7±0.3 md/dl. Polysaccharides caused also significant reduction of this glycemia to value of 152.8±0.1 mg/dl compared to negative control with 250.0±0.1 mg/dl. In antidiabetic test for 21 days of treatment, aqueous and methanol 80%, and soluble fractions significantly diminished the glycemia levels of treated diabetic rats to values ranging from 127.3±0.3 and 158.3±0.1 mg/dl on Day-7, and 94.5±0.4 to 136.6±0.4 on Day-21 and finally to attain values from 84.5±0.0 to 97.5±0.3 on Day-30. Crude polysaccharides showed significant decrease of glycemia of treated diabetic rats by producing values from 118.6 ±0.3 and 92.3±0.4 mg/dl on Day-7 and -21 respectively and continue its decrease until value of 86.3±0.4 on Day-30 compared to negative control having glycaemia values of 258.3±0.2 and 262.3±0.5 on Day-7 and -21 respectively. In OGTT, aqueous extract decrease significantly glucose level of treated hyperglycemic rats to 88.1±0.4 mg/dl compared to negative control giving glucose level of 161.3±0.2 dl after 180 minutes. These reported results clearly showed that all samples from Raphia sese ripe fruits possessed interesting hypoglycemic and antidiabetic activities in animal model
