DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERN IN CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AT TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Aim: Evaluation of drug utilization in chronic kidney disease patients. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective observational study on drug utilization in CKD patients which was based on the collection of data on the daily visit to department of nephrology, medicines, and HICU in tertiary care hospital. The study involves the analysis of medications and compared with standard guidelines (K/DOQI). The patients who meet the criteria were involved in the study. Results: A total of 74 cases analysed during the study out of which 76% were male and 24% were female. Analysis of WHO core drug prescribing indicator showed that the average number of drugs prescribed per patients was 14, percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name was (752)70%, percentage of patients with an injection prescribed was (436)41%, percentage of drugs prescribed from essential medicine list was (528)49%. Antihypertensive drugs (163)15.3% were most commonly used drugs followed by Antimicrobial (137)12.8%, Vitamins (88)8.2%, Anti-diabetic (85)7.9%, PPI (62)5.83%. Conclusion: Alimentary tract and metabolism were the most prescribed medications followed by cardiovascular drugs, anti-infective drugs and blood and blood forming products.
