Dr. Mamatha K.* and Dr. Surekha S. Medikeri

ABSTRACT

Background: Plants are a natural source of secondary phyto-constituents. Many secondary phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, exhibit antioxidant properties. This compound plays a crucial role in skin care by helping protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Nowadays cosmetic industries are looking for plants that naturally contain antioxidants and bioactive substances. Mukhakantikara lepa is one such ayurvedic formulation that contains 7 herbal drugs, used as face application for the treatment of vyanga (melanosis). This formulation improves the complexion and is also beneficial in preventing the reoccurrence of acne. Aim: Exploring the antioxidant potential and phytochemical composition of mukhakantikara lepa. Materials and Methods: Total Phenolic and flavonoid content were quantified spectrophotometrically and in vitroantioxidant activity was measured by DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging assay. Results: Secondary Phytochemical screening shows the presence of phenols, phytosterols, and flavonoids. Quantitative estimation of extract shows Total phenolic, phytosterol, and flavonoid content in the sample was 7.05mg CE/g, 35.55 mg CHE/g, and 881.5mg QE/g of dry extract, respectively. The IC 50% (Inhibition concentration) of ABTS: 86.297 μg.mL-1 and IC 50 % of DPPH: 130.44μg.mL-1). Conclusions: In the present study, the higher flavonoid content and observed antioxidant action indicated the natural antioxidant properties of Mukhakantikara Lepa, highlighting its medicinal importance.
