RASAUT (ROOT EXTRACT OF BERBERIS ARISTATA) AND ITS MEDICINAL APPLICATIONS: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
This review aims to have deep, intensive knowledge of the general description and medicinal uses of Rasaut. It is a drug obtained from the roots and stem bark of many plants of the genus Berberis L. (Family: Berberidaceae). This has been used for centuries throughout the world to treat several diseases such as conjunctivitis, bleeding piles, ulcers, jaundice, an enlarged liver, and spleen. Recent Phytochemical and pharmacological studies have shown that the drug possesses actions of antimicrobial, antiemetic, antipyretic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-arrhythmic, hypolipidemic, sedative, anti-cholinergic, cholagogue, anti-leishmaniasis, and anti-malaria properties. The drug has an effective pharmacological action and shows a promising future for further research.
