ABSTRACT
In Ayurveda, Danta sharkara (dental tartar) is responsible for tooth mortality by altering the periodontal support to teeth. Tartar deposits from the teeth were removed by an ultrasonic scaler on the 1st day after informed written consent from a 25-year-old male patient with periodontal signs and symptoms of dental tartar, and from the next morning, the patient was advised to gently brush with Yavakshara powder and honey paste on scaling wound twice daily for 7 days. The patient was advised to visit on the 3rd, 7th day during the period of treatment, and the result was assessed on the 15th day of follow-up on the clinical parameters (tartar index, gingival index, sensitivity index, pocket depth, and halitosis index). The Yavakshara powder has a mild abrasive action, aiding in smoothening the exposed tooth surface. Its alkaline nature helped in the deep cleansing of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). The honey has antioxidant properties, speeding up the healing process of gingival tissue. Honey stimulates the saliva flow which contains lysozymes that lyse micro-organisms by breaking up cell walls. Thus, Yavakshara powder and honey paste is very effective on scaling wound in dental tartar. Besides, both drugs are easily available, economical, and have negligible side effects.
