Syzygium cumini L belongs to Myrtaceae family used in traditional medicines for various diseases in particular, diabetes, cough, dysentery and inflammation. Stem bark of this tree is used for treating sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, thirst, ulcers and blood impurities. the leaf and bark powder has a high source in vitamin A and vitamin C. Presence of various secondary metabolites, essential oils and molecules contribute to its medicinal properties and pharmacological activities. HPTLC analysis was used for quantification of secondary metabolites in various parts of Syzygium cumini L., a plant with medicinal value from the Myrtaceae family. The present study was done using acetone extract of leaf, bark and seed. HPTLC analaysis of leaf extract revealed 7 spots under UV-254nm; in UV-366nm 12 spots and in visible light vanillin – sulphuric acid 11 spots were detected. The acetone extract of bark of S. cumini HPTLC finger printchromatogram was recorded at UV-254 nm showed 7 spots, in UV-366 nm 13 spots, in vanillin – sulphuric acid reagent 11spots observed. Separation was performed on silica gel 60 F254 HPTL plate with vanillin – sulphuric acid as a mobile phase.

Keywords: HPTLC analysis, Syzygium cumini L., Acetone, Bark extract.
