SOLID LIPID NANOPARTICLES: A NOVEL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Neharika B.* and M. P. Kusuma
ABSTRACT
Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) were introduced in 1990sas an
alternative carrierto that of traditional colloidal carriers like polymeric
nanoparticles, liposomes and emulsionas they have advantages like targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release with increased stability. Solid lipid nanoparticles are rapidly developing field innanotechnology with several potential applications in drug delivery, clinical research, pharmaceutical industry, as well as in other varied sciences. This review gives anoverview about the advantages and their limitations of SLNs, formulation procedures, characterization, route of administration of SLNs, generally carried out. Aspects of solid lipid nanoparticles stability and the influence of various excipients used in SLNs. SLNs drug incorporation models and their release pattern, and the major applications of SLNs.
Keywords: Solid lipid nanoparticles, SLNs, Solid lipid, Surfactants, Co-surfactants, Drug incorporation.
