COMPARATIVE IN-VITRO STUDY OF SWETA CHITRAKA(PLUMBAGO ZEYLANICA) AND RAKTA CHITRAKA(PLUMBAGO INDICA) AGAINST BACTERIA CAUSING RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS

ABSTRACT
In Ayurvedic classics Chitraka is a herb indicated in Kasa and Krimi.
Plumbago zeylanica Linn and Plumbago indica Linn. are selected for
the present study. Research has been carried out for Kasaghna
property. Krimighna property can be inferred to its antibacterial action.
Here the study has been carried out against Staphylococcus aureus and
Klebsiella pneumoniae keeping Staphylococcus aureusATCC and
E.coli ATCC as standards. Materials and methods: Kwatha of Sweta
Chitraka and Rakta Chitraka have prepared according to Ayurvedic
standard and study conducted by Agar dilution method and Time Kill
Assay. Results: After In-vitro study, both sweta Chitraka and Rakta
Chitraka kashayams has shown inhibition of growth of Staphylococcus
aureus, but failed to inhibit klebsiella pneumoniae.
