ABSTRACT

Topical drug delivery can be defined as the application of a drug containing formulation to the skin to directly treat the cutaneous disorder. Emulgel is the emerging formulation for the topical drug delivery, and till date it has less marketed product, so it is interesting and challenging to focus on emulgel and it has a dual control release system i.e. gel and emulsion. The major objective behind this formulation is enhancing the topical delivery of hydrophobic drugs (Boswellia serrata and Glycyrrhiza glabra) by formulating Emulgel using high molecular weight water soluble polymer of Carbopol-940 and Carbopol-934. The prepared emulgel were evaluated for their physical appearance, pH determination, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, in-vitro drug diffusion, determination of microbial load, and stability studies. All the prepared Emulgel showed acceptable physical properties like homogeneity, consistency, spreadability, viscosity, and pH value. HPTLC Analysis showed the marker compounds present in the extract and the final formulation (F4).The best formulation F4 (4% carbopol-934) showed better drug release (83.89%) at the end of 5h study and it was found to follow Hixson model kinetics. The Emulgel were found to be stable with respect to physical appearance, pH, and Rheological properties and drug content at all temperature and storage conditions for 45 days. So, herbal emulgel containing Boswellia serrata and Glycyrrhiza glabra can be used as a broad spectrum for topical drug delivery.

Keywords: Emulgel, Boswellia serrata, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Topical drug delivery, Carbopol, Arthritis.
