Abstract

A REVIEW ON UTERINE FIBROIDS: MECHANOTRANSDUCTION A NEWER PERSPECTIVE AND COMPLICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

Aparna Arora*

ABSTRACT

Leiomyomas commonly known as uterine fibroids are benign tumors responsible for reduction in Quality of Life in about 70% of women of menopausal age. The growth of fibroids and them being untreated may cause severe problems like, excessive loss of blood which may cause anemia and weakness and in severe cases it may also cause infertility in women. The following article discusses the detailed classification of uterine fibroids, its aetiology, epidemiology, symptoms and pathogenesis in detail. The discussion goes on to the methods of diagnosis of uterine fibroids and treatment which involves both oral and surgical therapies. Mechanotransduction a general dynamic system of mechanical forces generating chemical signaling can also be seen as a newer perspective in the treatment of Uterine fibroids. Mechanotransduction can be used to decrease the stiffness of the fibroids due to the accumulation of extracellular matrix. Theoretically, the signals that lead to matrix deposition would be suppressed and the fibroid cells would be more likely to undergo apoptosis as a result of the reduced stress applied to the cells. Higher risk of Hypertensive Disease is also a growing concern in women suffering from uterine leiomyoma. uterine fibroids increase the risk of cesarean delivery, breech birth, and postpartum hemorrhage. On term ultrasound signals, the fetal section that is seen above the fibroid indicates the need for a cesarean birth. After a cesarean delivery, a skilled obstetrician may remove fibroids (Cesarean myomectomy). Further researches should be conducted to increase quality of life and decrease the disease burden inn women suffering from leiomyomas or uterine fibroids. The discovery of new therapeutic targets and treatments for people who don't require hysterectomy may result from the elucidation of these disease pathology areas.
