ABSTRACT
The main objective of this mini review article is to deliver ample data
and information on the several studies demonstrating the utilization of
Fosfomycin for respiratory related infections. Fosfomycin has long
been used to treat bladder infections and given a single dose of 3 g in
an oral preparation. There is also an intravenous preparation utilized
for multidrug resistant bacterial infections. As an antibacterial agent it
targets the cell wall of the microbe thereby having its broad spectrum
of activity. This drug has a low incidence of very harmful adverse
effects. Several studies showed that intravenous preparations of
Fosfomycin showed satisfactory clinical response to patients. Other
studies showed that it is clinically useful in treating infections due to various multidrug
resistant bacteria such as penicillin-resistant pneumococci, methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Thus, Fosfomycin is a
potential antibiotic agent that can be utilized to treat numerous diseases caused by bacterial
species including respiratory related infections.
