ABSTRACT
The objective of present study was to evaluate the Sun Protection Factor of ethanolic extract of corolla tubes of N.arbor-tristis L. flower, commonly known as Parijatak flower. This flower has reported to have carotenoids, amongst which crocetin is the main constituent. The Rf value of compound was found to be 0.25 by HPTLC, which is indicative of containing crocetin. Literature survey has showed that caroteoids show sunscreen activity, therefore, the Sun Protection Factor of topical cream containing ethanolic extract of N.arbor tristis
was determined in vitro, by method specified in COLIPA using Xenon Arc lamp in Optometrics Model SPF-290 Analyzer. The SPF was found to be 1.12 and Boots Star Rating as 3, the critical wavelength was found to be 383.92 nm while UV-A/UV-B ratio as 0.696. Thus, revealing that the topical cream of N.arbor-tristis has good potential as sunscreen agent or as an additive in any other sunscreen formulation.
