Abstract

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ANTHELMINTIC AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF CASCABELA THEVETIA LEAVES

Biswanath Prusty* and Santanu Kumar Hotta

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of the anthelmintic and antibacterial properties of a methanolic extract of Cascabela thevetia leaves is the purpose of the current study. It has been demonstrated that this substance has antibacterial effect against microorganisms. By adopting the disc diffusion method, two bacterial strains Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus were examined. The extractive compound’s antibacterial activity is almost on par with that of regular erythromycin. Additionally, the in-vitro anthelmintic activity of the extract from Cascabela thevetia leaves was examined on Pheritima posthuman (adult Indian earthworms). For Cascabela thevetia, the paralysis time of earth worms varied from 8 minutes to 10.14 minutes, and for regular medicine Albendazole API, it ranged from 24 minutes to 45 minutes. However, the death time of earth worms ranged from 11.11 minutes to 22 minutes, and forAlbendazole API, it takes 38–64 minutes. When evaluated at various concentrations of these extracts and the Standard drug, ranging from 20 to 100 mg/ml, was found to be active. The outcomes showed that the leaf extract had a considerable impact on the gram-negative bacteria’s cell membrane. To sum up, leaf extract is extremely valuable as a natural antibacterial and anthelmintic.
