ABSTRACT
Benzimidazole consists a heterocyclic aromatic ring is its structure. It is possible to combine the two aromatic rings of benzene and imidazole to create this bicyclic molecule. It is a solid that crystallizes into tabular shapes and is white. The current review was emphasized on the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives for evaluation for anti-depressant activity. First benzimidazole derivative synthesized by Hobrecker in 1872. The IUPAC name of benzimidazole is 1H-benzimidazole; molecular formula: C7H6N2 and molar mass: 118.14g/mol. Depression is disorder related with mood of person. Feelings of sadness, loss, or anger are some symptoms of depression which interfere with a person’s everyday activities. Depression may interfere with our daily work, resulting in lost time, lower productivity, influence relationships and some chronic health conditions. Various researchers have been synthesized the substituted benzimidazole derivatives and evaluated for antidepressant potential in animal models. In the past ten years, attempts have been made to synthesis medicinally significant benzimidazole derivatives, and various benzimidazole derivatives with promising biological activity have been found. Benzimidazole derivative- 5-(2E)-1-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl] prop-2-en-1-ylidene pyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione decreased immobility time when evaluated anti-depressant activity. In the current review, efforts are made to summarize the synthesis of several benzimidazole derivatives having anti-depressant activity. It is hoped that this review would be useful to nascent scientists studying the design of benzimidazole-based drugs.
Keywords: Benzimidazole derivatives, antidepressant, o-Phenylenediamine, immobility time, forced swimming test.
