ABSTRACT
Fracture being a complex pathology needs a rational and holistic approach for treatment. Primary goal of fracture management is to restore the normal structural integrity and physiology of the broken portion as soon as possible, with no or few complications as possible.Classification and treatment of Fracture are well explained in classical Ayurvedic Literature under Bhagna Chikitsa. The fracture and its treatment was first mentioned in Sushruta samhita (Nidana sthana and Chikitsa sthana) in 1500 BC and those principles are so pertinent that they are still used by orthopaedic surgeons today. Four basic principles were mentioned by Acharya Sushruta: Anchhana(Traction), Peedana (Manipulation), Sankshepana(Opposition and Stabilization), and Bandhana
(Immobilization). For improving the process of bone healing, Acharya has listed a variety of internal drugs like Arjuna (barkpowder of Terminalia arjuna), Laksha (Shellac powder), Asthishrinkhla (Cissus quadrangularis), wheat (seeds of Triticum aestivum), certain Ayurvedic formulations, like Laksha Guggulu and Abha Guggulu, and external drugs for lepa made from drugs such as Manajishtha (Rubia cordifolia Linn), Madhuka (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn), Raktachandana(Pterocarpus santalinus Linn), Shali (type of rice), and Shatdhauta Ghrita, as well as various types of bandages and slings. Asthisanharadi Churna is among these formulation, described in Bhav prakash Chikitsa sthana, 48th chapter, Bhagnaadhikar, is a group of herbal drugs which exhibit special effect on promoting Bhagna Sandhana (fracture healing). The swelling, agony, and soreness associated with a fracture can be effectively treated with herbal medications. When utilized under the direction of a skilled practitioner, conventional medicine can also hasten the healing process.
