Abstract

EVALUATION OF TOXICOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF STANDARDISED LEAF EXTRACT OF EPIPREMNUM PINNATUM IN EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS

Sun Chao*, Sreemoy Kanti Das and Wang Xiaoli

ABSTRACT

Recent studies have already proved different pharmacological activities in some species of genus Epipremnum. A different plant of the same genus Epipremnum Pinnatum also contains bioactivities but it is not scientifically used for research in many fields. Aims of the present study is to evaluate the nootropic potential of standardized extract of Epipremnum Pinnatum against scopolamine-induced amnesia in experimental animals. An eleveted maze and Morris water maze are used to evaluate the nootropic potential of Epipremnum Pinnatum. To access the nootropic activity a dose of 400mg/kg and 600mg/kg was used and for the amnesia in mice scopolamine (0.4 mg/kg) is used. In adition, while measuring the level of acetylcholinesterase in the mice brain, the anti-acetylcholinesterase activity of the extract was evaluated. Epipremnum Pinnatum was not only found to increase memory of mice but it reverse scopolamine's amnesiac action in dose- dependent manner. In compare to control group, the Epipremnum Pinnatum decreased the transfer latency in elevated plus maze and Morris water maze. The reversing effect of scopolamine in amnesic mice is a result of further biochemical investigation that revealed decreased level of TBARS and this investigation as well as disclosed the result that showed increased level of acetylcholine. Epipremnum Pinnatum revealed the results in reversing the amnesiac action of scopolamine in a positive manner; perhaps this is the mechanism for its memory retention activity. Present study provides a piece of scientific evidence for the nootropic potential of Epipremnum Pinnatum in experimental animals based on the experimental outcome.
