A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY ABOUT THE PREVALENCE OF POTENTIAL DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION CO-MORBIDITIES AND POLYPHARMACY IN VARIOUS INPATIENT DEPARTMENTS IN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL USING PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT
Background, Objectives: This study is substantially concentrated on to identify the frequency of potential drug-drug interaction among diverse inpatient departments of a Government Headquarters Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. Isolation of important drug-drug interaction which were found in prescription according to their severity and examining the distribution of those drug-drug interaction in applicability to demographic features like gender and age are other objectives of this study. Methods and Materials: A prospective observational cross-sectional study was conducted and the time taken to carry out this study was 3 months period from January 2023 to March 2023 in a Government Headquarters Hospital of the State Tamil Nadu. This exploration includes two hundred and eighty eight [288] patients, including both male and female cases from diverse departments like general medicine, surgery, psychiatric, orthopedic wards. Results: The average number of drug interaction per prescription was said to be 1.1. Number of Prescriptions with one drug-drug interaction was 85, thirty two prescriptions were set up with greater than five drug-drug interactions. Out of 288 cases, the number of Major drug-drug interaction was 189, Moderate drug-drug interaction was 43, Minor drug-drug interaction was 45. Conclusion: Polypharmacy and drug-drug interaction are the extensively recognized drug related problems. By mollifying polypharmacy issue, drug-drug interaction in prescriptions can be downgraded.
