CONCEPTUAL STUDY ON MADATYAYA (ALCOHOL ADDICTION)

ABSTRACT

In Ayurveda, the varieties of disorders causd by the excessive and improper use of alcohol are well described and documented under one heading Madatyaya or Panatyaya. It is a Sannipataja Vyadhi (caused by vitiation of all the three dosha- Vata, Pitta and Kapha). It mainly vitiates Ojas, as Madya have opposite quality of Ojas. Madatyaya is not just an alcohol intoxication, dependence or withdrawal state, but it is the condition where multiple systemic dysfunctions are involved from immediate and severe manifestations. Neurological, gastro-hepatic and cardiac manifestations are the commonest features seen in the patients of Madatyaya. Today Madatyaya is main social problem, leading to mortality and morbidity in turn leads toburden on nation’s economy. To deal such social problem this study has been carried out.
