Abstract

MICRONEEDLES FOR TRANSDERMAL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

Putta Monika, *Dr. Aparna Pisipati and Dr. Y. A. Chowdary

ABSTRACT

Transdermal drug delivery system has a unique penetration character of by passing the first pass metabolism and sustained release of drugs. Recently, use of micron-scale needles is increasing skin permeability has been proposed and has shown drastic increase in transdermal delivery. Micro needles are the type of transdermal drug delivery system that is pain free, less trespassing, and easy to self-administer, with a high drug bioavailability. 3D printing and digital technology contribute to the improvement of micro needle fabrication technology. 3D printing is a process of making a physical object from a 3- dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession. The most widely used methods for transdermal administration of drugs in present scenario are hypodermic needles, topical creams and transdermal patches. This review introduces the types of micro needles and their design, materials used for fabrication, and manufacturing methods and recent biological applications and clinical trials are introduced.

Keywords: Micro needles, transdermal drug delivery, fabrication strategies, influencing factors, first pass effect and types.
