*Vd. Aishwarya Subhash Bankar, Vd. Vijaykumar U. Gawai and Vd. Sukhada Suraj Jagtap

ABSTRACT

Dhoopana Chikitsa (medicinal fumigation) is one of the important parts of Ayurvedic treatment. Dhoopana Karma is an integral part of Rakshoghna Karma, which protects against microbes. We are surrounded by billions of microorganisms & most of them are not harmful for humans. But they may prove harmful in neonatal wards or labour room. Thus, proper disinfection & sterilization is always important especially in neonatal wards. Also, Dhoopana Chikitsa is used in various ailments & many Dhoopana Yogas (formulations of fumigation) are found in Ayurvedic Samhitas. References of Dhoopana can be traced to Vedic period & has been rooted in our traditions. Modern researches have also verified its ability as purifying & sterilizing medium. Also, in Ayurvedic literatures, fumigation is indicated for sterilization of operation theatres & labour rooms & also in wound management. In Rogas like Arsha, Jwara, Unmad, Romantika, Shotha etc. Dhoopana Karma of plants has been included as treatment module. Different formulations for Dhoopana Karma have been mentioned by Acharya Charak, Sushrut, Vagbhat, Kashyap & Yogartnakar.

Keywords: Dhoopana Karma, Rakshoghna Karma, microorganism, disinfection, sterilization, fumigation.
