As one of the different varieties of Vrana (wound/ulcer), Dushta Vrana (chronic infected ulcer) was noted. Acharya Sushruta devoted several chapters to the description and management of Vrana in his Sushruta Samhita, a representative treatise of Indian school of Surgery. One of the Shashti upkarma of Vrana is the application of Kshara karma for Shodhana and Ropana of Dushta Vrana. In Sushruta Samhita's Ksharapakavidhi adhyaaya, Pratisarneeya Kshara is recommended for management of Dushta Vrana. With combination of Tridoshahara, Chhedana, Bhedana, and Lekhana characteristics, Kshara is regarded as an effective local treatment for Dushta Vrana. Acharya Sushruta has provided a variety of Dressing materials, including Pichu, Plota, Kawalika, and Vikeshika. Among these Plota is used to clean the wound as well as to absorb the discharge of wound.
