ABSTRACT
Wet granulation has been successfully used to create SR fixed dosage bilayer matrix tablets that include 5 mg of Miglitol as IR from one layer and 500 mg of metformin HCl as SR from another layer. While Miglitol provides IR from the second layer, HPMC, which is employed as the matrix-forming polymer for the metformin layer, permits desired drug release for up to 8 hours. No discernible variation was identified in the metformin release profiles that resulted from the SR layer of the tablets across the various grades of HPMC that were examined. This shows that when the medication is water-soluble and the dose is large,
the viscosity of the polymer does not alter the rate of drug release.
