A STUDY ON MEDICATION ADHERENCE, SIDE EFFECTS AND SEVERITY OF MORBIDITY IN PSYCHIATRIC OPD AT TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Back ground: Antipsychotics are the drugs used to treat psychotic disorders,howerer patients often fail to adhere to their treatment, and this has a severe negative effect on prognosis in these kinds of illnesses. Maintaining adherence to medication is the most essential, but challenging course in the pharmacological treatment modality for major psychiatric disorders. Antipsychotics are the drugs associated with range of side effects that influence patient subjective wellbeing negatively resulting in poor adherence. In order limit the negative consequences of side effects, they should be regularly systematically assessed, using validated scales and severity is assessed by using Hads
scale. The aim of the study was to study the medication adherence, side effects severity of morbidity in psychiatric disorders. Methodology: A cross sectional hospital based study of sample size of 150 conducted at Department of psychiatry, Santhiram medical and general Hospital, Nandyal from November 2021 to APRIL 2022.To assess and study the medication adherence ,side effects and severity of morbidity in psychiatric disorders. Results: A total of 151 individuals were assessed for the medication adherence, side effects and severity of morbidity. In these a total of 70.86 %( n= 107) patients are adherent to the treatment, where 29.13% (n =44) patients are non-adherent .side effects to the majority of people were normal. The most commonly reported side effects were change in weight(39.7%), change in appetite(28.4%), sleep problems(25.1%), restlessness(22.5%), confusion(19.5%), tension(17.8%), muscle weakness(17.8%), headache(16.1%), drowsiness(16.1%) and irritation(14.5%).in severity of depression severity is high compared to the anxiety and psychotic patients. Conclusion: The prescribing pattern seen in the psychiatric department are medications such as risperidone (64 patients), Clonazepam (43), Olanzapine (43), sertraline (32), are commonly prescribed.More no. of patients with major psychiatric disorders did not adhere to their psychotropic medication (19 out of 51). The adherent patients among psychiatric disorders are seen in anxiety disorder patient (40). The demographics of the patients who are more prone to psychiatric disorders according to the study are:
