ABSTRACT

Topical drug administration is a systemic and localized method of delivering drugs through skin and is considered an attractive alternative to oral and parenteral routes. Gels have better potential as a vehicle to administered drug topically in comparison to other dosage forms. The present investigation involves formulation of topical gel of Fexofenedine Hcl was prepared to increase its bioavailability. Fexofenedine Hcl is a second generation antihistamines medications for treatment of allergic rhinitis and cholinergic urticaria. This study aims to formulate and evaluate topical gel of Fexofenedine Hcl and using different concentrations of Carbopol 940 and HPMC K 35 as a gel base. These formulations were evaluated for physical appearance, pH, viscosity, spreadability, bioadhesive strength, drug content and in vitro drug release studies were examined. Among the all formulations the drug release was dependent on the concentration of carbapol 940 and HPMC K 35. The topical gel of Fexofenedine Hcl showed acceptable mechanical characteristics and satisfactory % drug release. The prepared gel was transparent with smooth surface without any interactions between drug and polymer. Hence F3 Formulation showed best results because all the parameter showed satisfactory results. The optimized formulation (F3) showed maximum highest percentage of drug release.

Keywords: Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, Topical gel, Carbapol 940, HPMC K 35, Cholinergic Urticaria Treatment.
