A REVIEW ON MEDICINES FOR PUZHUVETTU (ALOPECIA AREATA) IN CLASSICAL SIDDHA LITERATURES

ABSTRACT
Siddha system is one of the most ancient systems of medicine in India. In Siddha literature 46 types of diseases confined to scalp are explained in which Puzhuvettu (Alopecia areata) is one among them. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder characterized by transient, non-scarring hair loss condition. Hair loss can take forms ranging from loss in well defined patches to diffuse or total hair loss, which can affect all hair -bearing sites. Patchy Alopecia areata affecting the scalp is the most common type. Siddhars bestowed treasure of knowledge upon us through Siddha literatures. Effective medicines for the
treatment of Puzhuvettu (Alopecia areata) can be found by searching Siddha literatures. This Literature review is aimed to establish the Internal and External medicines for Puzhuvettu (Alopecia areata) in classical Siddha literatures. Various types of medicines are used for the treatment of Puzhuvettu such as Thylam, Mai , Mezhugu , Chooranam, Chendurum and other types of medicines which includes Kudori, Poochu etc,. This study provides valuable information for further research purpose.
