ABSTRACT
The oral route is widely used for administering different types of pharmaceutical dosage forms, such as tablets, capsules, syrups, suspensions, and emulsions. To address the issue of difficulty in swallowing for geriatric and pediatric patients, fast dissolving drug delivery systems have been developed, including mouth dissolving films and MDTs. A new dosage form called oral thin films is constructed of hydrophilic polymers that quickly disintegrate when applied in the buccal cavity. Compared to mouth dissolving tablets, mouth dissolving films are superior in terms of their low production cost. They also have several advantages, including self-administration,
fast dissolving, rapid absorption, and the ability to bypass swallowing difficulties. This study aims to provide detailed information about different polymers and their concentrations, as well as their applications. The study also focuses on the usage of plasticizers, polymers, sweeteners, different oral film manufacturing techniques, and various film evaluation criteria. The goal is to provide an informative resource that highlights the versatility and benefits of oral films as a dosage form.
