ABSTRACT
Medicated Chewing Gum (MCG) is a promising drug delivery system that offers fast onset of action and the potential for buccal delivery. It is an effective vehicle for administering active ingredients that can improve health and nutrition. Compared to traditional oral dosage forms, chewable tablets and CGs allow for more rapid therapeutic action. They are particularly well-suited for children with full dentition, and have been well-received by parents. MCG has the potential to be used for the local treatment of oral diseases, as well as for the treatment of systemic conditions. This innovative drug delivery system offers a non-invasive mode of drug administration, making it a
boon for treating oral diseases. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the composition, manufacturing process, and characterization of medicated chewing gum. While studies evaluating the mechanical properties of MCGs have been limited, available performance tests and procedures for assessing their mechanical and textural properties have been given less emphasis. MCG can be used for both local (mucosal) treatment of oral conditions and systemic (transmucosal) delivery through direct intraoral immersion via the buccal mucosa.
