PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF SACCHARUM SPONTANEUM: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Saccharum spontaneum L. commonly known as Kasa belongs to the family Poaceae and is native to tropical Asia. Traditionally it is used for many ailments like burning sensations, obesity, dyspepsia, mental illness, urinary tract infection, dyspepsia, sexual weakness, gynecological and respiratory troubles. As per Ayurveda system it is used as astringent, emollient, diuretic, purgative, tonic and aphrodisiac. According to the Siddha system, it is used for mental diseases, abdominal disorders, dyspnoea, anaemia, and obesity. Different studies reported that this plant is a rich source of quinone, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, carbohydrates, proteins, coumarin, phenol, steroid, terpenoids,
and glycosides. This review emphasizes chemical constituents, safety & toxicity, traditional uses, and pharmacological activities of the Saccharum spontaneum plant.
