ABSTRACT
The discovery and development of new drugs is a complex process because it takes a long time and requires several resources. This review article provides a brief overview of drug discovery, drug development, and the clinical stages of drug discovery. New development ideas can come from a variety of sources, including current market needs, emerging diseases, academic and clinical research, the commercial sector, and others. Once the discovery target is selected, the pharmaceutical industry works on the initial process to identify chemical molecules with properties suitable for drug targeting. This
process involves candidate identification, synthesis, characterization, validation, Screening and Therapeutic efficacy studies. Once the compound shows value in these studies, the drug will begin clinical trials in the early stages. The overall theme of our article is that the process is long, complex, and expensive enough that multiple biological targets must be considered for each new drug approved for clinical applications, and new research tools may be required to study each new target. From initial discovery to a marketable medicine is a long and challenging task.
