ABSTRACT
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD), being one of the most common causes of irreversible blindness in older people globally is a complicated eye condition. According to clinical standards, AMD is categorised as early stage to late stage. Initially it affects the macula and then the centre of the retina in advanced stages. Advanced AMD is divided into two types: exudative or neovascular form and nonexudative or atrophic form (dry AMD) (wet AMD). Usually, the wet type is linked to more severe eyesight loss. Ageing, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and several genetic variables all contribute to AMD's pathogenesis. Process of ageing make it more difficult for essential nutrients to get absorbed and utilised. Recent research reveals the interrelationship between diet and ARMD. The role of the diet in the development of ARMD is an area that demands more attention. ARMD can be considered as a disease of Drishti patala due to defective metabolism and ageing. Ahara is considered as one
among the Trayopasthamba, which shows the importance given to Ahara by Ayurveda in care and cure. Pathya and Apathya Ahara are advised for each condition and most of the time if Pathya ahara is followed, the medications to be taken will be minimum. Thus, updating the daily diet with the addition of Vayasthapaka gana dravyas, Chakshushya dravyas and Pathya ahara according to the stages of the disease may be helpful in arresting the progression and preventing the onset of Macular degeneration.
