ABSTRACT
Approximately 2.6 million children around the world are infected with HIV. Only 24% of them are currently taking the necessary treatment. In sub-Saharan Africa, over 90% of children infected with HIV are living. AIDS is the leading cause of death among adolescents in the region. In 2015, the WHO lifted restrictions that prevented people with HIV from starting treatment for their condition. The organization noted that all individuals infected with the virus should be treated immediately. Any new-borns who have been exposed to HIV should also be put on an ART prophylactic regimen. Many more new-borns, kids, and teenagers will be taking antiretroviral drugs as these recommendations are put into practise and access to ART for kids
expands globally. For the management of HIV, ART compliance is essential. Lower viral loads, less patient symptoms, and decreased viral resistance are all results of proper ART adherence Patients must convert to more expensive and scarcer second- and third-line medications due to viral resistance to first-line ART. Children who are HIV-positive respond better to ART as treatment grows more potent, which increases their life expectancy. HIV-infected children can live long, healthy lives with high ART adherence, hence it is important to research and address the causes of inadequate adherence during a child's lifetime of treatment with the intention of preserving effective therapy for as long as feasible. Children with HIV face many challenges in keeping up excellent adherence. Cost of medications, availability of medications, HIV stigma, and HIV disclosure to children are a few of these. The absence of formulations that are kid-friendly is a common theme among studies on ART adherence difficulties. Children of all ages frequently dislike the current generation of paediatric ARTs All of these elements affect adherence and, consequently, the survival of HIV-positive children. It will be simpler for carers to give children their drugs and simpler for kids to take their prescriptions if ART is developed in child-friendly formulations. These strategies will boost adherence, which is essential for long-term success. HIV treatment. This paper will examine the current impediments to paediatric ART adherence, the challenges in developing more tolerable paediatric formulations, and the supporting data for the requirement for suitable pediatric formulations.[1]
