ABSTRACT
Ever since the life originated human being has been susceptible to injury which made him to think about healing from very early stage of development. Probably after being exposed to injury, the first dressings ever used were leaves of trees, which were easily available and by his constant research he may have found leaves of some plants useful in wound management. In Ayurveda, particularly Sushruta has mentioned various types of wounds and their management which is of prime importance in any surgical practice/procedure. In recent past brilliant progress of surgery in various fields has immensely reduced the incidence of wound infection by decreasing the impediments associated with wound healing to certain limit. But still wound management continues to be a subject of speculation. For the management of dushtavrana(wound), he incorporated number of drugs broadly classified into vranashodhana and vranaropana both the processes i.e, shodhana and ropana have been therapeutically grouped under seven headings kashaya, varti, kalka, sarpi, taila, rasakriya and avachoorna. One of the most important retarding factors which delays wound healing and is also responsible for formation of dushtavrana is infection by various organisms. Sushruta was well aware of this fact and that is why he advocated preventive measures to protect wound from flies and air borne infections by Dhoopana with certain Krimighana drugs like Ghrita, Nimba, Sarshapa, Guggulu, Aguruetc which helps in disinfecting the surroundings. Hence an attempt has made to recollect the reference about the work entitled practically.[1]
