CLINICAL STUDY ON KANDAMALAI (GOITER) – VEETHANAKOLA VEEKAM BASED ON SIDDHA MEDICINES

ABSTRACT
Swelling in throat region identified as thyroid gland is termed „Kandamalai‟ in the context of Siddha medicine system. It actually refers to the enlargement of the „veethanakolam‟. Kandamalai is also called as kazhutthukazhalai. It is more common in women and the people who are in the age group of 50 and above. It occurs due to thyroid dysfunction which is known as kurai veethana surappu noi (hypothyrodism) or Athiveethana surappu noi (hyperthyrodism). High
intake of goitrogens can worsen thyroid function that blocks iodine to enter into thyroid gland for people who suffers from thyroid relevant issues. This clinical study has treated a patient of 57 Yrs old lady who had kandamalai. She had the symptoms of swelling in the neck, throat tightness and coughing, shortness of breath and weight gain. The entire treatment was carried over using only Siddha medicines. Plain Kodiveli chooranam, Anna pavala chenthooram, plain Ammukura-kizhangu chooranam and Aadathodai kudineer were administered internally. Kazharchikkai choorana pattru and Nunapattai thailam were used for external therapy. The patient also underwent Varma therapy like Sangu varmam, Thilartha varmam and kondaikolli varmam in the treatment of kandamalai.
